CSEC SOCIAL-STUDIES

Course Overview

This course provides a complete and focused preparation for CSEC Social Studies, covering
key themes such as society, development, governance and Caribbean integration in one
streamlined programme.

Students will develop:
– Understanding of Caribbean society and social structures
– Awareness of environmental and development issues
– Knowledge of governance and citizenship
– Ability to answer structured and exam-style questions effectively

Course Content

WEEK 1 – THE INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY & SOCIETY

Overview
Students explore their role in society and the importance of social relationships and
institutions

– Roles and responsibilities of individuals
– Family structures and functions
– Social institutions (education, religion, government)
– Social issues (crime, gender roles, youth development)

WEEK 2 – SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT & RESOURCES

Overview
Students examine how resources are used and the importance of environmental
sustainability.

– Types of natural resources
– Environmental issues (pollution, climate change)
– Conservation and sustainable practices
– Caribbean environmental challenges

WEEK 3 – GOVERNANCE & CITIZENSHIP

Overview
Students learn about government systems and their role as active citizens.

– Structure of government
– Rights and responsibilities of citizens
– Democracy and elections
– National development and public services

WEEK 4 – CARIBBEAN INTEGRATION & EXAM PREPARATION

Overview
Students explore regional cooperation and prepare for exams..

– Caribbean identity and culture
– Regional organisations (CARICOM, OECS)
– Trade and development in the Caribbean
– Exam practice (Paper 1 & Paper 2 techniques)
