CSEC ECONOMICS
Course Overview
Based directly on the official CSEC Economics syllabus (Micro + Macro), this course prepares students to understand, apply, and analyse economic concepts in real-world Caribbean contexts.
Students will develop:
– Strong conceptual understanding of economics
– Graph interpretation and calculation skills
– Ability to analyse real-world economic issues
– Confidence for Paper 1, Paper 2 and SBA
Course Content
WEEK 1 – FOUNDATIONS OF ECONOMICS (MICRO)
Overview
Understanding basic economic concepts and resource allocation.
– Nature of Economics (scarcity, choice, opportunity cost)
– Economic agents (households, firms, government)
– Production Possibility Curve (PPC)
– Factors of production (land, labour, capital, entrepreneurship)
– Economic systems (capitalist, socialist, mixed)
WEEK 2 – DEMAND, SUPPLY & MARKET STRUCTURES
Overview
Students explore market forces and how prices are determined.
– Demand and Supply (laws, graphs, equilibrium)
– Shifts vs movements in curves
– Elasticity (price, income, cross)
– Market structures (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly)
– Market failure (causes and effects)
WEEK 3 – MACROECONOMICS & THE FINANCIAL SECTOR
Overview
Students examine the wider economy and financial systems.
– Money and banking (functions, Central Bank, institutions)
– GDP, GNP, National Income (calculation & interpretation)
– Inflation, unemployment, recession
– Government policies (fiscal & monetary)
– Circular flow of income
WEEK 4 – INTERNATIONAL & CARIBBEAN ECONOMICS
Overview
Students connect economics to global and Caribbean realities.
– International trade (comparative advantage, BOP)
– Exchange rates and trade policies
– Caribbean economies (features & challenges)
– Globalisation and economic integration (CARICOM, CSME)
– Exam practice (Paper 1 + Essay training + SBA guidance)
