CSEC PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTS

Course Overview

This course provides a complete and focused preparation for CSEC Principles of Accounts, covering accounting fundamentals, financial records, and business financial reporting in one streamlined programme.

Students will develop:
– Strong understanding of accounting principles and concepts
– Ability to prepare and interpret financial statements
– Skills in recording and analyzing financial data
– Confidence in solving structured accounting problems

Course Content

WEEK 1 – INTRODUCTION & FINANCIAL POSITION

Overview

Students build a strong foundation in accounting principles and financial statements.

– Concept and purpose of accounting

– Types of business organisations

– Accounting equation (Assets = Capital + Liabilities)

– Preparation of simple and classified balance sheets

WEEK 2 – BOOKS OF ORIGINAL ENTRY & LEDGERS

Overview
Students learn how transactions are recorded and organised.

– Books of original entry (sales, purchases, cash book)

– Source documents and transactions

– Posting to ledgers (double entry system)

– Trial balance preparation and purpose

WEEK 3 – FINANCIAL STATEMENTS & ADJUSTMENTS

Overview
Students prepare financial statements and understand adjustments.

– Trading, Profit & Loss Accounts

– Preparation of Balance Sheet

– Adjustments (accruals, prepayments, depreciation)

– Basic ratio analysis and interpretation

WEEK 4 – ADVANCED TOPICS & EXAM PREPARATION

Overview
Students explore advanced accounting topics and exam techniques.

– Control systems (bank reconciliation, suspense accounts)

– Partnership and company accounts basics

– Incomplete records

– Exam practice (Paper 1 & Paper 2 techniques)
